TESTING OVERVIEW

In the coming weeks, students will be taking a variety of state tests and assessments. All tests will be administered during school hours, typically following breakfast. It is important that your student(s) be here on time on their assigned testing day.

The middle school/high school will operate on a Tuesday testing schedule. Juniors and Seniors in good standing will not be required to come to school on the four "Testing Tuesdays." On these days, Juniors and Seniors are required to complete virtual college and career activities. Students taking CCP courses are still responsible for completing their coursework during these days. All other grades should plan on attending school for the entire day. MS/HS HDA students are required to take all state tests, at the school, on the designated testing days.

This testing schedule was created to decrease the number of testing days, loss of instructional time, and to create smaller testing groups. Our goal is to create a more focused testing environment and to set high expectations regarding student performance.

High school students earn points based on their test scores and are required to meet test based proficiency scores in Algebra I and ELA II to graduate, in addition to course credits. Elementary and Middle School state test scores help identify areas of proficiency, as well as areas of need for each student.

Please encourage your student(s) to do their best, so their scores are a true reflection of their academic achievement.

OHIO STATE TESTS

State achievement tests tell us how well our students are growing in the knowledge and skills outlined in Ohio's Learning Standards. These tests help guide and strengthen future teachings so we can be sure that we are preparing our students for long term success in school, college, careers, and life. Test results also allow the community to know how their local schools are performing compared to others around the state.

MAP ASSESSMENTS

To assist Brown Local Schools in providing the best educational experience for our students, three times throughout each school year we administer the MAP Assessments (Measure of Academic Progress). This assessment provides us with valuable information which is used to plan instruction and educational decision making in order to better meet the individual needs of all of our students. When taking these computerized, adaptive tests, the difficulty of each question is based on how well a student answers all of the previous questions. As the student answers correctly, questions become more difficult. If the student answers incorrectly, the questions become easier. In an optimal test, a students answers approximately half the items correctly and half incorrectly. The final score is an estimate of the student's achievement level.

TEST TAKING TIPS

GET UN-STUCK:

If you get stuck, don't get frustrated. Reread the question. If you need to, circle it and come back later. Eliminate answers you know are wrong. Make the best guess you can.

GO SLOW:

Read directions slowly and carefully for each question.

DO YOUR BEST:

Make sure you are doing your best work on your test. Think clearly, read carefully, and put forth your best effort.

POSITIVE ATTITUDE:

It might be tough, but you can do it! A good attitude goes a long way!

RELAX:

If you feel nervous, relax your mind. Take a deep breath, stretch your legs, and think about something that makes you happy. Try your test again!

ME only!

Don't worry about others. Focus JUST on yourself. Don't worry if others finish before you.

PREPARE YOUR BODY:

Get a good night's sleep, and eat a healthy breakfast.
